What is Digital Forensics

  • Preventing Evidence Tampering: It’s crucial to make sure that the evidence is not tampered with. For example, if a computer is off, it should stay off while collecting evidence to prevent any claims of tampering. 

Steps in Digital Forensics Investigation

  • Securing the Evidence: This involves actions like disconnecting the network in case of a ransomware attack to prevent further communication and data exfiltration. 
  • Incident Response: Responders follow a specific playbook tailored to the type of cyber threat. This includes gathering indicators like when the issue was noticed, the nature of the loss, and details about any demands made in cases like ransomware. 
  • Engagement with Law Enforcement: Providing clear and detailed indicators helps law enforcement agencies track and work on the issue more effectively. This includes explaining the tools and methods used during the investigation. 

Career Path in Digital Forensics

  1. Education: Pursue a degree in computer science, information technology, or cybersecurity. Many universities offer specialized programs in digital forensics. 
  1. Certifications: Obtain certifications like Certified Computer Examiner (CCE), Certified Forensic Computer Examiner (CFCE), and GIAC Certified Forensic Analyst (GCFA) to validate your skills and knowledge. 
  1. Hands-on Experience: Gain practical experience through internships or entry-level positions in cybersecurity firms, law enforcement agencies, or corporate IT departments. 
  1. Stay Updated: The field of digital forensics evolves rapidly. Stay current with the latest tools, techniques, and legal requirements by attending workshops, seminars, and continuing education courses.
